Sickle Cell: The Next 100 Years
14th to 16th April - Leicester, UK
2010 marks the100th anniversary since Dr James Herrick published his first observations on ‘peculiar elongated cells’, now known as sickle cell disease. This international conference is designed to bring together papers from academics and practitioners around the world to provide a platform for the dissemination of global and contemporary social research and provide an overview of future research to be undertaken over the next 100 years. Attendance is open to all members of the sickle cell community. The conference will be led by Dr Simon Dyson, Professor of Applied Sociology and Director of the Unit for the Social Study of Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell at De Montfort University. Other prominent key speakers confirmed for the event are Kwaku Ohene-Frempong, Professor of Paediatrics and former Director of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, USA; Professor Karl Atkin, a medical sociologist and co-editor of the international journal Ethnicity & Healthand; and Dr Jemima Dennis-Antwi, Regional Advisor, Anglophone Africa, for the International Confederation of Midwives.
